Method for reversibly switchable cross-linking of monomers comprises: (a) cross-linking the monomers by adding complexable metal ions so as to form a polymer; (b) bond-breaking the polymer by applying a direct voltage and changing a pH value of the polymer and changing the temperature of the polymer. The monomers include compounds of formula (I) and (II). [Image] R1> - R6>H, OH, -NX2, -OX, -SH or -SX (where not all residues are H at the same time); X : alkyl and aryl groups terminally substituted by reactive residues selected from OH, -CH(O)CH2, -NCO, -COOH and NZ2; Z : H, alkyl, aryl groups, (one of the Z being a hydrogen).</p>
