PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display device in which a display with high reflectance and good contrast can be obtained. SOLUTION: The reflection type liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal cell having a liquid crystal material layer inserted between a pair of transparent substrates having electrodes, a polarizing plate, a reflection plate and an optical anisotropic material having a twisted structure, and a driving voltage is applied on the liquid crystal material layer by selecting the voltage from two or more voltages. In this device, the polarizing plate is disposed on one face side of the liquid crystal material layer, the reflection plate is disposed on the other face side of the liquid crystal material layer, and the optical anisotropic material is disposed between the polarizing plate and the reflection plate. When the ratio of the refractive index anisotropy Δn at λ=450nm to Δn at λ=590 nm is defined as the birefringent wavelength dispersion αexpressed by α=Δn(450)/Δn(590), the birefringent wavelength dispersion α1 of the liquid crystal material layer and the birefringent wavelength dispersion α2 of the optical anisotropic material satisfy the relation of α2>α1. |
