Z-cut LiNbO3-based Mach Zehnder interferometer type optical modulators are provided with coplanar strip electrodes (12, 13; 42-1/2/3; 82-1/2/3/4/5/6) which are velocity matched to the optical modes in the waveguides (11a, 11b, 41a, 41b, 81a, 81b). The (optionally tapered) 50 OMEGA electrode structures are arranged with respect to the optical waveguides so as to achieve fixed or minimally tunable zero or non-zero amounts of modulation chirp parameter depending on the electro optic overlap integrals of the two waveguides. A voltage source provides either a single drive signal (to electrodes 12 or 42-2) or two in-phase drive signals for symmetric driving (to electrodes 82-2 and 82-5). |
