PURPOSE: To provide an ink jet printer comprising a line head having high resolution and image quality and low power consumption and cost. CONSTITUTION: The ink jet printer 100 ejects ink liquid drops from a plurality of nozzles 124a in a line head 120 arranged in the lateral direction across the entire width of a recording medium toward the recording medium and records a character or an image composed of ink dots hitting on the recording medium. The line head comprises a plurality of head chips 121, each having a specified number of nozzles 124a and drive circuits 128 therefor, arranged in the lateral direction such that the nozzles overlap each other. The number of nozzles of each head chip is equal to an integer times of the number of split drive phases of nozzle plus the number of overlapping nozzles.
