PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic penetration test machine which is able to hold a penetration rod rapidly and a method for holding the penetration rod. SOLUTION: The present invention provides a penetration test machine which is equipped with a loading table 3 installed movably up and down, a chuck unit 5 pivotally mounted on the loading table 3, a driving source section for rotating the chuck unit 5, and the penetration rod 43 held by the chuck unit. The chuck unit 5 is possible to be perforated as the penetration rod 43 passes through it and has engaging means at the perforated point by the penetration rod, while the rod is provided with a hook stop connectable with engaging means of the chuck unit, these components are configured so as to engage automatically by shifting engaging means to the hook stop point through lifting movement of the loading table.
