[Also in Division B8] A plastics container 1, Fig. 1, or article having an enlarged portion located endwise relative to a more intermediate portion, is made by differential pressure forming generally cylindrical sections 2, 3 in plastics webs, trimming the sections 2, 3 from the plastics webs so that at least one section has its open end terminating in a peripheral flange, trimming off the flange, rotating at least one of the sections 2, 3 while the sections are supported in axial relation with their open ends in confronting relation and bringing the open ends of the sections 2, 3 into telescopic relation and friction welding them together. The sections 2, 3 having flanges 20, 15, respectively, are moulded by a conventional differential pressure moulding process and trimmed from the plastics web, Fig. 2 (not shown). Conveyers 57, 65, Fig. 4, convey the sections 3, 2, respectively, to a loading station 60 where they are fed by star wheels (62), Fig. 5 (not shown), 66 to supports 44, 44a, Fig. 6, which comprise members 45, 45a in which springs 49, 49a are provided to hold the sections 3, 2. Each member 45, 45a is fixed to a sleeve 40, 40a journalled on a pedestal 33, 33a by bearings 41, 41a and secured to a coupling 38, 38a having a flange 39, 39a accommodated in a groove in a sleeve 35, 35a. Bearings 43, 43a are interposed between the sleeves 35 and 40, 35a and 40a. The sleeves 35, 35a carry rollers 37, 37a acted on by cams 50, 53 to cause vertical displacement of th supports 44, 44a. The pedestals 33, 33a are mounted by arms 32, 32a on discs 28, 29 fixed on a shaft 27 for rotation therewith. As the shaft 27 rotates, the sections 3, 2 become seated in the spaced-apart supports 44, 44a which are then rotated in opposite directions by the engagement of driven belts 93, 93a with pulleys 104, 104a on the sleeves 45, 45a. The belts 93 93a are disengaged from the pulleys 104, 104a and the cams 50, 53 move the supports 44, 44a, which are freely rotating, together to telescope the sections 2, 3 which become friction welded together. The supports 44, 44a are moved apart and the assembled container 1 is deposited on a shelf 83, Fig. 4, and discharged by a star wheel 66<SP>1</SP> on to the conveyer 57. The flanges 20, 15 are trimmed from the sections 2, 3 by devices 105a, 105, which are similar to each other, whilst the supports 44a, 44 are being driven by the belts 93a, 93. The device 105a, Fig. 8, comprises a blade 106a in a holder 107a pivotable on a rod 109 connected by a link 110a to a crank arm 111a fixed to a shaft 112. The rod 109 and the shaft 112 are secured to the discs 28, 29. The blade 106a is moved to its operative position by a stationary cam 117 acting, against a spring 115, on a roller 114 on a lever 113 fixed to the shaft 112. Air jets may be provided to eject the severed flanges.
