Waste and residual material, optionally with additional fuel, has a calorific value exceeding 6 MJ/kg. Raw gas (7) produced at a final temperature of 1100 deg C or more, is brought into contact with water, cooling it. By water evaporation, the gas is saturated with steam. A residual quantity of liquid water takes up solid, liquid and water-soluble gaseous components of the raw gas. Preferred Features: The hot raw gases at 1100 deg C or more are cooled indirectly with heat recovery, before contact with water. The hot raw gases experience partial cooling by contact with a limited quantity of water which is fully-evaporated and mixed-in, indirect cooling in a heat exchanger used to generate steam or hot water, and cooling to ambient temperatures, combined with absorption of soluble gaseous components. Contacting of the hot raw gases is with recirculated water, which has already taken up gaseous components of the raw gases. The recirculated water before contacting raw gases is freed from entrained solids. Following cooling, to take out further soluble gaseous compounds, the gases are brought into intensive contact with water or recirculated water already containing raw gas components. The water, enriched in gaseous components is further processed to valuable materials. CO- and H2-rich residual gas, once the water soluble components have been partially or completely removed, is employed as a fuel or for synthesis. Gasification takes place in suspended flow. The feedstock comprises a mixed diversity of halogen-containing, mutually-soluble or -insoluble solids and liquids: residues and wastes. |
