A process and assembly detect and characterise the relative presence of ground water and sub-surface water deposits. The novelty is that radon is employed as a natural trace element and its presence measured together with electrical conductivity. Also claimed is a process to determine the optimum pumping times from ground water observation pipes, to determine the time at which a representative sample of ground water should be taken. The novelty is that: (a) water samples are taken at defined intervals; (b) the radioactive concentration of the water samples is measured; (c) the optimum time at which the representative ground water sample is taken, is when the radioactive level is constant; (d) the radioactive concentration is measured off-line; (e) the water sample is held in a sealed container excluding air but incorporating a toluene scintillator. Also claimed are a flow measurement cell and a bore hole probe.
