The fluid coupling has a by-pass system (54) which allows the impeller (30) to be connected to the casing (12) so that they rotate together. This consists of a piston (56) which presses a friction plate (64) against a shoulder (14) on the casing. A compressed air source (80) is used to move the plate towards and away from the shoulder.
