PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an edge defect by means of an inexpensive image processing computing system and accomplish speedup and automation of the detection. SOLUTION: An edge defect detector 10 is constructed of a camera 12 arranged putting a glass plate 11 between it, a light source 13 arranged behind the glass plate 11, a display device 15 displaying an image signal from the camera 12 as an image, a light quantity regulating part 17 throttling a light quantity reaching the camera 12 from the light source 13 so that the surface of the glass plate 11 and a general surface of an edge 16 in the glass plate 11 are darkened while a crack existing in the edge 16 is lightened in the image on the display device 15, and a defect determining device 18 determining a luminescent spot corresponding to the crack in the image as a defect. In this way, only the crack appearing in the edge can be illuminated, while all the other parts of the glass plate are darkened, so that the crack can be detected easily and efficiently.
