PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a projection type display device capable of projecting an image based on an optical modulation element on a screen surface from an oblique direction in a state where trapezoidal distortion is reduced while realizing the miniaturization of the entire device. SOLUTION: This projection type display device is provided with the optical modulation element where plural pixels are linearly arrayed, an optical scanning means performing scanning with luminous flux from the optical modulation element, a projection lens projecting the luminous flux from the optical scanning means to the screen surface from the oblique direction. The optical scanning means is arranged on or near the pupil surface of the projection lens, and a two-dimensional image is observed on the screen surface by optical scanning by the optical scanning means in the device. The dimension of the projected image observed on the screen surface is adjusted by making the sampling methods of the respective pixels of the optical modulation element different.
