The invention provides an apparatus (1) for the measurement of surface roughness of flexible sheets (27), especially paper, by the air leak method or by an optical technique. The apparatus includes a backing member (1) comprising a membrane of soft elastomeric material (3) supported on a fluid reservoir (2). In use, the elastomeric membrane (3) is pressed against the back surface of a sheet under test whilst gas flow rate impedance or optical measuremnts are performed on the front surface of the sheet under test. The invention also provides a method of measuring the surface roughness of sheet material using an apparatus according to the invention.
