A light emitting device comprises a substrate with a first light-emitting piezoelectric layer having a polar plane. An Independent claim is also included for the production of a light emitting device comprising preparing a substrate and forming a first light-emitting piezoelectric layer on the substrate under conditions in which the surface opposing the surface of the layer has a polar plane. Preferred Features: The substrate is selected from a sapphire substrate with a c-plane, an R-plane, an m-plane, an X-plane, a rotating substrate cut from a plate directed in the Y-direction, a double rotated sapphire substrate, a rotated quartz substrate, a TiTaO3 substrate and a LiNbO3 substrate. The light-emitting piezoelectric layer is made from ZnO, AlN or CdS.
