When employing appliances for the optical melting point determination of a substance, the latter is placed in a substance tube (3) and heated in an oil bath. During heating, a thermometer (6) arranged next to the substance tube is monitored. The appliance shown very considerably simplifies said monitoring, by making it possible to observe both the substance and the thermometer scale simultaneously through a single eyepiece (26). The superimposition of the thermometer scale is effected by a reading head which can be displaced along a guide rod (15) and which, via a mirror (23) and a prism (24), superimposes the desired part of the scale into the eyepiece. The substance tubes (3) are superimposed into the image via an objective (27). <IMAGE>
