PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and properly judge the changeover of a track. SOLUTION: A retry count value CT is read out in the ST1 and the obtained value is stored as a count value Ns. The present time is stored as a requested command issuing time Tct in the ST2, and the requested command is supplied to a tape drive 30 in the ST3. When the discrimination is made in the ST4 that the response command is supplied, the present time is stored as the response command receiving time in the ST5. When the elapsed time (Tcr-Tct) is longer than a prescribed time Tnm in the ST6, the process is advanced to the ST7 to read out again the retry count value CT, then an obtained count value Nf and the count value Ns are compared in the ST8. When the count value Nf is equal to the count value Ns, the process is advanced to the ST9 and the discrimination is made that the changeover of the track is executed.
