PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift switch device of thin and uncomplicated structure. SOLUTION: The shift switch device 4 has an automatic gear change mode, a manual gear change mode, a shift lever 1, and a shift switch unit 4 for detecting the position of the shift lever 1. The shift switch unit 4 has a select switch for detecting whether the shift lever 1 is in the automatic gear change mode or in the manual gear change mode, and an up/down shift detection switch for detecting whether the shift lever 1 in the manual gear change mode is operated for up-shift position or for down-shift position. The select switch and the up/down shift detection switch each have one operation bar 8 put in contact with or in engagement with a lever portiors 1d to be oscillated with the shift lever 1 The select switch is open/closed with the linear movement of the operation bar 8. The up/down shift detection switch is open/closed with the oscillation of the operation bar 8.
