Detecting Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a flow-through cytometer is new. Detecting Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a flow-through cytometer, comprises: (a) preparing a bacterial suspension; (b) growing of the bacteria in nutrient solution; (c) adding at least one fluorescent-labelled indicator, specific for one of the bacterial species; (d) adding a fluorescent-labelled indicator for damaged cells and an antibiotic to test the resistance; (e) running the suspension through the flow cytometer and radiating each bacteria with a laser; (f) measuring the fluorescence of each bacteria as the laser hits it; and (g) evaluating the total of the single measurements to determine the resistance of the bacteria to the tested antibiotic.
