Decentralized switch units (15, 15') are mounted directly on the machines to be operated and monitored. These units supply power to the machine actuators and sensors. Safety-relevant signals are produced from the sensors and/or automatic- and/or manually-operated safety equipment at positions of risk, on or in the machine. They are sent over at least two channels to the switch unit (15, 15') for evaluation of each operational state. One of the channels (the second) includes its own (safety interlocking) computer (6) constructed as part of the switch unit (15').
