PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera where the capacity of a buffer memory required at the time of photographing plural pictures is reduced, a casing is miniaturized and cost is reduced. SOLUTION: A release switch 31 giving the instruction of the photographing of a picture is installed. At the time of photographing plural pictures which hourly continue with the instruction by the release switch 31 under control by a system controller 28, a color picture signal generated by a picture processing part 20 is compressed by a compression part 21 and it is temporarily stored in a buffer memory 22 formed of DRAM, for example. Namely, picture data is compressed before it is temporarily stored in the buffer memory 22 and therefore the capacity of the required buffer memory 22 is reduced.
