PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the safe and effective subject prophylactic and therapeutic agent capable of suppressing the onset of cardiac failure by suppressing the activation of a mast cell, and having no side effect by including a compound having activities for suppressing the activation of the mast cell of the heart as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This prophylactic and therapeutic agent contains a compound having activities for suppressing the activation of the mast cell of the heart, preferably 2-(3,4-dimethoxycinnamoyl)aminobenzoic acid (general name: tranilast) as an active ingredient. The daily dose of the active ingredient is 100-1,000 mg, preferably 300-600 mg per adult by an oral administration when the tranilast is used as the active ingredient. As a result, the activation of a mast cell is suppressed, and a compound having activities for suppressing the isolation of a chemical mediator such as histamine from the mast cell is expected as the prophylactic and therapeutic agent of the cardiac failure.
