PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a picture display device capable of limiting luminance in accordance with an average video level without lowering the gradation. SOLUTION: A display panel 6 has an electron generating part in which electron emitting elements are arranged in a matrix shape. A pulse width modulation circuit 4 has a constant current control circuit 41 and drives the display panel 6. A high-voltage power source circuit 8 supplies a high voltage to the panel 6. A current detecting circuit 81 detects the value of a current Ia flowing from the circuit 8 to the panel 6. The current Ia is converted into a voltage Vb by an I-V conversion circuit 9 to be inputted to the circuit 41. Then, values of constant currents to be supplied from the circuit 41 to electron emitting elements of the panel 5 are controlled in accordance with this voltage Vb.
