摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively generate ultraviolet rays having optimum wavelength for a pasteurizing device or a hazardous substance decomposing device without using mercury. SOLUTION: A dielectric substance vessel 1 of hollow inside is made of a dielectric substance transmitting ultraviolet rays, and a pair of electrodes 2 are installed on the side of the vessel 1, and a power supply 4 to supply AC or pulse voltage is connected with the electrodes 2, and the vessel 1 is filled with an electric discharge gas 3. From the power supply 4, AC or pulse voltage is supplied to the electrodes 2 so that electric discharge is generated along the inner surface of the vessel 1, and thereby plasma is produced so as to generate ultraviolet rays 5. Example of the gas 3 is a mixture of a rare gas such as xenon, krypton, argon, and oxygen or halogen gas or the like.
