An anaerobic treatment plant treats water bearing an organic load and consists of a reactor with an inlet and an outlet. The water flow through the reactor is controlled by a flow regulator unit. The reactor is subdivided by panels (4) into chambers (5), with water flowing (9) from one chamber to the next. The flow of water can be directed (12, 13) from any single chamber to any other single chamber, and the flow interrupted in whole or in part as required.
