A substance (2) which is liquid at normal temperature and pressure is enclosed in a container (2) sealed with a movable membrane (4). Cyclic heating of the liquid generates vapour bubbles (7) which collapse upon subsequent cooling, causing a cyclic movement of the membrane. Independent claims are also included for (a) the vibration generating device, and (b) a portable electronic device, e.g. mobile communication device or phone, incorporating the vibration generating device, which can be used to alert the person carrying it of an incoming call.
