PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing the subject compound characteristic in the method for producing a water-free alkali metal polysulfide as intermediate. SOLUTION: This method for producing the subject compound of formula I, Z-R1-Sn-R1-Z [R1 may be interrupted by N or S, being a 1-8C branched/non- branched alkyl or 8-14C (CH2)pPh(CH2)p ((p) and (n) are each an integer of 1-4) alkylaromatic group; Z is (R2O)3-mR2mSi (R2 is a 1-6C branched/non-branched alkyl; and (m) is 0-2)] comprises reacting a silylalkyl halide of formula II, ZR1X (X is Cl, Br or I; Z and R1 are the same as mentioned above, respectively) with an alkali metal polysulfide of formula III, M2Sn (M is Na or K; and (n) is the same as mentioned above); wherein the alkali metal polysulfide is prepared by reaction between an alkali metal hydroxide or formula IV, MOH (M is the same as mentioned above) and elemental sulfur in a non-aqueous solvent or in bulk.
