PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a master information carrier and a production method thereof in which information signals can be recorded uniformly and stably at high density over the entire surface of a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The master information carrier comprises a basic body 10, a ferromagnetic thin film 11 placed on the basic body 10 to form an arrangement pattern corresponding to a magnetization pattern, wherein the ferromagnetic thin film 11 has substantially flat surface. The basic body 10 has a recess 10a located at a position corresponding to the magnetization pattern and the recess 10a is preferably formed such that the surface 11a of the ferromagnetic thin film 11 projects above the surface 10b of the basic body 10.
