PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically which the linear transforming operation from/to logarithmic transforming operation of an electric signal against the incident light of an area sensor corresponding to the luminance of an object to pick up an image. SOLUTION: When the luminance of an object detected by a luminance signal sent from an area sensor 3 is higher than a certain fixed value (700 cd/m2, for example), a switching discriminating circuit 4 discriminates that the area sensor 3 is to perform the logarithmic transforming operation. Corresponding to the discrimination of this switching discriminating circuit 4, a switching signal is sent from a switching signal generating circuit 5, and the area sensor 3 performs the logarithmic transforming operation. When the luminance of the object detected by the luminance signal sent from the area sensor 3 is lower than a certain fixed value (700 cd/m2, for example), the switching discriminating circuit 4 discriminates that the area sensor 3 is to perform the linear transforming operation. Corresponding to the discrimination of this switching discriminating circuit 4, a switching signal is sent from the switching signal generating circuit 5, and the area sensor 3 performs the linear transforming operation.
