PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form good-looking zigzag stitch patterns both in forming the patterns on one material to be sewn continuously without changing and in forming the patterns on a new material changed from a previous one by selectively changing a sewing mode between the mode of forming zigzag stitch patterns according to a prescribed sewing order and the mode of resetting the prescribed sewing order on the way for forming zigzag stitch patterns according to a prescribed sewing order from the first stitch data. SOLUTION: In this zigzag stitch sewing machine, a first mode and a second mode can be selectively changed by operating a mode changing switch. In the first mode, position data are read in according to the data order stored in a stitch table, and the movement of a needle bar 4 is controlled by driving a stepping motor 22 based on the read-in position data. In the second mode, while the needle bar 4 is controlled by the stepping motor 22, reading in the position data according to the data order of the seam table, the data order is reset based on the operation of a mirror reversing switch, the position data are read in the reverse direction to the data order and movement of the needle bar 4 is controlled.
