A method and device for detecting the presence of personnel in underground mining

A personnel safety detection system comprises detection sensors 25a - 25f on support frames 10a - 10f coupled to control units 27a - 27f whereby the sensors sample the working and operating areas 24b - 24d of the associated support frames and bring it to a standstill in its movement sequence if the sensors detect the presence of a person in a detection area 30. The detection sensors of the individual support frames may be switched on and off by the control units and are only activated when the associated support frame is to be moved and are deactivated after completion of the movement. The monitoring of the face 19 is only effected in the area endangered by the movement of the support frame. The detection sensors also comprise a transmitter and receiver unit for the activation of a transponder device carried by the personnel within the detection area. Additionally the sensors may cyclically perform a self-test.
