PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an incubator of high reliability that can uniformly retain the environmental conditions inside the incubator. SOLUTION: A lifter 18 that rotatably holds a rotor 17 integrally rotating together with specimen shelves 10 on which a plurality of plates 6 including specimens are placed in an inner space S1 of a box 2 is lifted and/or lowered with a feed screw 13 driven by a Z-axis motor, and the rotor 17 is rotated through a spline shaft 15 that is driven by an R-axis motor 20 thereby allowing the specimen shelves 10 to move in the space S1. The plates 6 including the specimens are taken in and taken out through a plate take-out and take-in port opened on the side face of the box 2. Thus, the opening of the plate take- out and take-in port can be minimized to suppress the fluctuation in the environmental conditions inside the box 2.
