The invention relates to a method for operating a portable data carrier configured for executing reloadable functional programs. According to the invention, a load interface is initially installed in the data carrier, whic h allows for reloading of load applications which in turn enable loading of functional programs. Each load application is assigned an unchangeable addre ss availability space. In order to support management of assigned address availability space, identifications are assigned to the application programs that are to be reloaded, said identification containing information on the space of storage capacity required for the application programs. Application s programs that are to be reloaded are assigned address space in the storage device in line with the space information contained in the identifications. The invention also relates to a corresponding data carrier for implementing the inventive method.
