PRODUCTION OF STEROID DERIVATIVE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a steroid compound useful as an intermediate for producing various kinds of vitamin D derivatives useful for the therapy of chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, etc., by epoxidizing a specific diene compound. SOLUTION: A 1,2-epoxy-5,7-diene compound [e.g. (1α,2α,3β,20S)-3-t- buthyldimethylsilyloxy-21-chloro-1,2-epoxy-20-methylpregna-5,7-diene, etc.], expressed by formula III is obtained by epoxidizing double bonds between the first and second sites of a 1,5-diene compound expressed by formula I [wherein R1 is H or a protecting group for OH group; R2 is acyl or an alkoxycarbonyl; and X is a halogen or a (protected) hadroxyl group] and making a palladium compound [e.g. tris(dibenzylideneacetone)dipalladium (chloroform), etc.], act on the resultant compound expressed by formula II.
