PURPOSE: An expansion device is provided to control flow rate for refrigerant even during heating operation, and reduce cost and volume by eliminating from configuration a stepping motor and an additional control circuit. CONSTITUTION: An expansion device comprises outer cases(31a,31b) having at an interior thereof expansion materials(32) and which are installed at a flow channel for passage of refrigerant, respectively, and expansion films(34a,34b) attached to the opposed surfaces of the outer cases and which control flow channel area for refrigerant by repeating expansion and contraction in accordance with increased or decreased volume of the expansion material contained in the outer cases. Since the spacing between the expansion films changes in accordance with the volume elastic expansion material, an orifice area formed at a portion where the discharge of refrigerant starts, is controlled, to thereby control the flow rate of refrigerant.
