PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adsorb movable ions existing in a liquid crystal substance to an insulation layer without using a charge collecting electrode such as an ion-trap electrode. SOLUTION: The element is constructed by sticking a pair of transparent electrode substrates, on respective surfaces of which transparent electrodes and alignment layers are formed and, at least on one of the substrate side, an insulation layer composed of titanium oxide and silica as principal components is arranged between the transparent electrode and the alignment layer, together via a peripheral sealant, and by enclosing a liquid crystal substance with >12 permittivity anisotropy in a cell gap between the alignment layers. In this case, antimony oxide is contained in the insulation layer, preferably with 3:1 to 1:2 ratio of added amounts of antimony oxide and silica (a ratio by weight of solid bodies after sintering). |
