PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external heating kiln in which the time to be elapsed before the temperature of a thrown-in material is elevated up to a level required for dry distillation can be shortened. SOLUTION: A rotator 3 having double structure of inner and outer cylinders 1, 2 is turned about the axis x while inclining and a material 11 is thrown into the inner cylinder 1 from the high side of the rotator 3 while heated air 9 (heat carrier) is introduced between the inner and outer cylinders 1, 2 so that dry distillation of the material 11 can be carried out. In such an external heating kiln, a large number of fins 19 are formed annularly within an appropriate range on the outer circumferential surface of the inner cylinder 1 on the material throw-in side in order to increase the contact area between the inner cylinder 1 and the heated air 9.
