PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve tatami of the prior art to eliminate its drawbacks of corrosion, growth of ticks, mold and bacteria, combustibility, and generation of formaldehyde and to eliminate toxic gases, typically formaldehyde. SOLUTION: The use of a calcium silicate based moisture absorbing/releasing material in tatami flooring allows the tatami flooring to have semi-permanent resistance to insects, mold and bacteria. The use of the moisture absorbing/ releasing material in the tatami flooring provides a moisture adjusting function. The use of tatami with photocatalyst particles present on a part or the whole of a tatami facing surface layer allows harmful odors, typically formaldehyde, to be adsorbed and decomposed.
