PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispense with provision of a high voltage circuit for a drive voltage generation circuit to apply a voltage between both cathode and gate electrodes by applying a specified voltage having a cold cathode electric potential being a reference to both electrodes in mutually opposite polarities and different axial directions, and allowing a cold cathode to emit an electron beam only when a difference between the electric potentials of both electrodes exceeds a specified value. SOLUTION: A tip of cold cathodes 5 of conical conductor in contact with, at its bottom part, a shift register of a drive voltage generation circuit and a plurality of cathode electrodes 2 of a cold cathode array integrally formed on a substrate 1 emits an electron beam while it protrudes from a mitute opening of a gate electrode 4 that controls emission of electrons. When a voltage of -40 V and a voltage of 40 V are respectively applied with the 0 V gland electric potential being a reference, for example, and a voltage difference becomes a specified value of 80 V. Then, to control it, electron beams from the cold cathode electrodes 511, 521 are emitted to an optoelectric conversion target of an optical image. The application voltage to both the electrodes may be the half of the necessary voltage 80 V, leading to simplification in the configuration of the drive circuit.
