PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure sufficient shock resistance to an unexpected collision of a magnetic head even when the thickness of a protective coat is reduced in a data are and to prevent a wear and breaking of the protective coat due to the contact and friction of the magnetic head in a CSS area. SOLUTION: When a magnetic film 3 and carbon-base protective coats 4, 5 which protect the magnetic film are disposed on a substrate 1 to produce the magnetic recording medium, the contact parts of the protective coats 4, 5 which come in contact with a magnetic head at the start or stop of the magnetic head are formed by an ion beam method using a gaseous hydrocarbon optionally in combination with at least one selected from Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe and then the protective coats 4, 5 are formed on the nearly entire surface of the magnetic recording medium by a sputtering method using N2 and at least one selected from H2, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe. In other way, an amorphous carbon layer is formed on the entire surface of the recording medium by the sputtering method and then a DLC layer is formed in the CSS area by the ion beam method.
