PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the warming-up characteristic in the start of an engine and to ensure the necessary warming-up characteristic, for example even when the engine is not provided with a sufficient cooling water passage near an exhaust port for the sake of the restriction on the layout or the like. SOLUTION: This controller determines the basic ignition timing in accordance with the characteristic (map) predetermined on the basis of the detected engine speed and the engine load (S10, S12), the correction amount for correcting the basic ignition timing in the spark advance direction over MBT is calculated on the basis of the detected water temperature (S14), and an output ignition timing in the spark advance direction over MBT is calculated and output (S20, S22). That is, the cooling water heat receiving amount is increased by utilizing the rise of temperature of the working medium in the combustion stroke obtained by the spark advance over MBT, whereby the warming-up characteristic can be improved.
