A domestic apparatus with a open chest to accommodate goods to be handled, especially foodstuffs to be cooled, is described. The chest opening can be closed in sealing fashion by a lid that can be placed on an opening flange. On the opening flange (11) is fastened an elastic seal (13) changing the chest opening. The lid (14) is designed essentially as a flat plate. The lid consists of glass or glass-like material. The lid is provided on two opposite sides with mirror-image attachments (15) projecting over both plate surfaces and preferably hoop-shaped. The opening flange possesses a stepped surface profile changing the chest opening. The seal is fastened to the lower step plane.
