PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a high quality matrix display device, which has high luminance, low power consumption and high yield, by providing at least two or more sets of switching elements that drive display pixels. SOLUTION: Relating to each pixel, a thin film diode(a TFD), in which a capacitive element and a nonlinear resistive element are connected in parallel, and a liquid crystal portion, in which a capacitive element and a resistive element are connected in parallel, are connected in a serial manner. Relating to the device, each pixel is driven in an active matrix manner using a data line and a scan line to display a picture. Note that the TFDs, which are switching elements, are made transparent. A bottom section transparent electrode 4, which is used as an ITO, is formed on a substrate 3 in a film shape. Then, a p type semiconductor layer 5, an n type semiconductor layer 6 and an isolation film 7 are successively formed on the electrode 4 and a top section transparent electrode 8, which is used as an ITO, is laminated on top of them. Then, liquid crystals and organic EL pixels are formed on top of them. Then, two or more sets of TFDs are connected to each pixel in parallel through a rapair electrode.
