PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely judge even a foreign matter most of which is present at a circumferential edge part and slightly hangs on a flat part, by binarizing image signals by a first and a second threshold values and processing tablets for a central area and its outer area. SOLUTION: In the visual inspection apparatus for inspecting foreign matter of tablets which is set, e.g. to a PTP packaging machine, image signals picked up by a CCD camera or the like and stored in an image memory are, for example, binarized by a predetermined first threshold value in step 1 and binarized by a predetermined second threshold value which is generally a darker level than the first threshold value in step 2. A tablet area specified in step 3 is separated to a first area of a central part and a second area of a circumferential edge in step 4. A foreign matter included even partly in the first area is detected with use of the first threshold value in step 5, and a foreign matter of the second area is detected with use of the second threshold value in step 6. The tablet in which the foreign matters are present is judged defective and discharged or the like in step 7.
