PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for extending a horizontal width of a television screen is provided to accurately check whether an edge of a television screen is white or black by using a black/white check exclusive device. CONSTITUTION: A microprocessor checks whether the state of a present television screen is suitable for the condition which performs a horizontal width extension of a video signal(S1). The microprocessor checks a present screen check position(S2). The microprocessor checks a timer(S5). The microprocessor enables the timer to operate(S6). The microprocessor judges whether a horizontal width is extended(S7). The microprocessor performs a horizontal width extension of the present screen(S8). The microprocessor increases the screen check position(S9). The microprocessor transmits a screen check setting changed(S10). The microprocessor initializes the timer(S11).
