PURPOSE: A sMS(Short Message Service) method in the mobile communication system is provided to carry out the service by assigning traffic channels between a mobile station and a mobile switching center. CONSTITUTION: If an origination connection request message from an MS(Mobile Station) is received to the PCSI(PCS Interface) of an originating side mobile switching center(201), the PCSI confirms the content of the origination connection request message(202). If the message is for SMS origination processing, the PCSI converts the message into an internal signal form and transmits it to an SMCO(Short Message COntroller)(203). The SMCO requests conformation to an LCC(Location register Call Controller) whether the MS is an SMS subscriber(204). If the MS is an SMS subscriber, the SMCO requests a traffic channel connection to the PCSI for the SMS(205). After receiving a traffic connection completion message(206), the PCSI receives the SMS origination connection request message from the MS(207) and transmits it to the SMCO. The SMCO transmits the message to a CPSC(Call Processing Service Controller)(208). The CPSC encodes the short message transmitted from the SMCO and outputs it to an SMSC(SMS center)(209). The CPSC sets a timer provided to check whether a normal receiving response signal is transmitted from the SMSC(210).
