PURPOSE: An apparatus for interfacing subscriber lines with an exchange is provided to interface optical subscriber lines with an asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) exchange by duplexing the optical subscriber lines. CONSTITUTION: An exchange for interfacing with subscriber terminals comprises subscriber lines(12,14,36,38), a first transmitter/receiver(24), a second transmitter/receiver(26), and a communication path supplier. The subscriber lines connect the subscriber terminals with the exchange by being duplexed. The first transmitter/receiver supplies a signal transmitting function between the subscriber terminals and the exchange, through one subscriber line of the duplexed subscriber line. The second transmitter/receiver supplies the signal transmitting function between the subscriber terminals and the exchange, through other subscriber lines. The communication path supplier supplies a communication path between the first transmitter/receiver and the second transmitter/receiver. The communication path supplier activates one of the transmitters/receivers by communicating the two transmitters/receivers.
