The invention provides a method of treatment of a human or non-human mammal subject to combat a retroviral infection, said method comprising administering to said subject an antivirally effective amount of a compound selected from oxyphenbutazone and other substituted-phenyl phenbutazones and substituted-phenyl prodrugs for oxyphenbutazone and other substituted phenyl phenbutazones.
