PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damages to the rod of a work tool cylinder by providing a protective cover which coves the rod, regardless of the expansion or shrinkage of the work tool cylinder on the rod side of the work tool cylinder. SOLUTION: This detecting device for work tool level is constituted of a work tool cylinder 2 for lifting or prostrating a work tool, a protective cover 3 provided on the rod 6 side of the work tool cylinder 2 and covering the rod 6, regardless of the expansion or shrinkage of the work tool cylinder 2, and a detector 4 detecting that the work tool is made horizontal. The length of the protective cover 3 and the fitting position of the detector 4 are set, so that the rear end of the protective cover 2 approaches the detector 4 to turn it on, when the work tool becomes horizontal. Not only can the horizontal state of the work tool be detected, but also the rod 6 of the work tool cylinder 2 can be protected from other objects such as sediment. The sediment dropped from the work tool is prevented from hitting against the rod 6 of the work tool cylinder 2 and damaging it.
