PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain highly pure hydroxyindene useful as a raw material for a resist material, a sealing material, etc., and further useful as a raw material or an intermediate for various phenolic compounds. SOLUTION: This method for producing 5-hydroxy-1,1,3-trimethyl-2-indene by thermally decomposing 5-hydroxy-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1,3-trimethylindane in the presence of an acid catalyst or an alkali catalyst comprises recrystallizing the objective compound from a mixture containing 5-hydroxy-1,1,3-trimethyl-2- indene and phenol to produce the objective 5-hydroxy-1,1,3-trimethyl-2-indene.
