PURPOSE: A light emitting diode is provided to manufacture an intermediate barrier layer, to capture carriers well, and to increase the fidelity of the device by maintaining the optical outputs. CONSTITUTION: A light emitting diode includes a substrate(1), a light emitting layer(6), a first clad layer(4) of a first conduction type, a second clad layer(7) of a second conduction type, and an intermediate barrier layer(5). The first clad layer(4) has an energy gap bigger than that of the light emitting layer(6). The second clad layer(7) has an energy gap bigger than that of the light emitting layer(6). The intermediate barrier layer(5) is of different conduction type, and has an energy gap bigger than that of the light emitting layer(6) but smaller than those of first and second clad layers(4,7). The light emitting diode is of a double-hetero structure, that is, a light emitting layer is inserted between first and second clad layers(4,7).
