PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the same impression of an image resulting from reproducing image data seen as that of an original scene at the time of acquiring the image data. SOLUTION: Image data S are read from a recoding medium 1 and given to an image processing means 3. A color conversion section 5 converts 3-stimulus values of each pixel in an image represented by image data into a chromaticity value and a mean value calculation section 6 obtains a mean value of chromaticity values. A physiological primary color conversion section 7 converts the mean value of the chromaticity values into a physiological primary color. This physiological primary color is regarded to be a white color of a photographing light source in a photographing state. A chromatic adaptation conversion section converts the chromaticity obtained by the color conversion section 5 so that the physiological primary color obtained by the physiological primary color conversion section 7 is coincident with the physiological primary color of a reference photographing light source. An RGB conversion section 9 converts the converted chromaticity values into an RGB color signal and an output section 10 applies image processing to the color signal and a reproduction means 4 reproduces the signal as a visual image.
